Our audio excerpt starts with the A section of the melody, which becomes an interesting AABBA form. The melody is all Latin, and is preceded on the recording with an eight-measure intro, also notated in all lead sheets. The solo form is simply AABA, with Art Blakey and other members of the rhythm section adding swing elements to the bridge against the Latin of the conga. You'll hear the soloists swing the bridge as well.
"Afro-Cuban" was recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's legendary Hackensack Studio.
Kenny Dorham's composition La Villa, from the first session of the "Afro-Cuban" album (January 30, 1955), is also available. The March 29, 1955, session is the second for this album, with a fourth horn added (trombonist J.J. Johnson) and some percussionists. Gigi's Gryce's Basheer's Dream is also from this session. Don Sickler recalls, "I was glad when trumpeter Roy Hargrove asked me to arrange Afrodisia for his Crisol Habana album which won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Performance. It's not surprising that other Latin/Jazz groups have also recorded it. " Nueva Manteca
