The audio excerpt starts with the melody, but the recording starts with Kenny Kirkland's rubato solo piano. Kenny improvised on the B section of the AAB1B2 melody and it made a great introduction, especially the way he set up the tempo. We've included this intro in all the lead sheets. This trio recording was sandwiched between two of Charles' own projects for CTI Records, both recorded at the Van Gelder Recording Studio. "The Proper Angle" session took place at the end of May, 1991, and became an award-winning album. On October 22, 1991, Fambrough recorded his first "The Charmer" session, where he created the medley track of Alycia/Andrea, compositions that he wrote for his daughters.
Pennsylvanian Charles Fambrough was a well-respected jazz bassist, composer and record producer. Fambrough received a scholarship to study classical piano, but picked up the bass at age thirteen, eventually leaving school to pursue his true passion in jazz as a bassist. In 1968 he began playing in local pit bands for musicals. He joined saxophonist Grover Washington's band in 1970. Fambrough also had considerable experience playing Latin jazz as a sideman with Airto Moreira and Flora Purim, as well as Jerry Gonzalez and the Fort Apache Band. Read more...
