Back In The Cage – Art Farmer

On the session, the trio played the blues while Art soloed for the whole track, laying out his ideas over the blues. Instead of providing lead sheets, we've made Art's solo available so you can explore those ideas along with him. Available in B-flat and C editions.

This transcription celebrates the anniversary of the April 19, 1958, recording. Art started off the year by recording Sonny Clark's "Cool Struttin'"' album on January 5th. That album was never "big" in the US, but it's one of the biggest if not the biggest Blue Note album in Japan. The next day Art recorded on a Jimmy Guiffre session.

On January 13, Art made his second album as a member of the Horace Silver Quintet. On January 31, he was on on Mal Waldron's "Mal/3: Sounds." On February 14, Art recorded with Dick Hyman. On March 25 and April 7, Hal McKusick. After the "Portrait" date, he finished out the month recording with Manny Albam (April 25), and on April 31, performed on the Timex All Star Jazz Show, a live CBS telecast, with the Gerry Mulligan Quartet.

Transcribed Trumpet Solo: This is an example of unwinding on a session and just playing the blues. Art trumpet starts the first chorus rubato (solo trumpet) setting up the tempo in the tenth bar of the blues. That becomes a four-measure set up (in "long meter") for Art's second blues chorus which remains in "long meter" and two-feel. Art solos for three more choruses then turns it over to Hank Jones for two piano choruses. Art returns for two more, breaking it down to a half-time four-feel for the last two measures.
