Balls Of Everything – Jack Walrath

Modal with a funky vibe, this medium-up Latin song is a good place to start with the music of Jack Walrath - it's rather simpler than many of his other songs. It's subtly clever, though, in Jack's unique style. The phrase lengths of the melody are often a bit irregular though over an even 32-measure AABC form. The two A sections start similarly, but with slightly different rhythms. As with other Jack Walrath songs, we show no key signature; however, the modal structure is clear with C Dorian on A and C and B♭ Dorian (with a couple of passing chords) at B. A rhythmic bass vamp runs throughout the head, set up by a four-measure intro. On the recording, the drums take the first solo; this is shown on our score and parts. Other solos begin with a chorus with the Latin groove before going to swing. The ending of the out head is almost the same as the in head, but with the rhythm of the sixth measure of C slightly different.
