Pianist and composer Walter Davis, Jr., understood the power of lyrics and always knew the lyrics of the songs he played. He wrote quite a few songs, both words and music, that he never had a chance to record, and this lovely ballad is one of them.

There is a rhythm section pick up of four eighth notes that sets off each A section of this 32-measure AABA ballad which you'll hear starting our audio excerpt.

Lyric Description: A Being Such As You describes a person’s sense that they have encountered a new lover in a dream or even a past life, and explores the excitement and intrigue that’s developing now that the pair are embarked on a romance.

Walter's piano playing was influenced strongly by Bud Powell, and he had that Bud Powell energy in his piano playing. Like many of the other talented players coming up in the 1950s, Walter's ears were wide open to everything good. For example, he listened to Stravinsky with Bird and Dizzy, and in later years, you could find Walter hanging with Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones. Read more...
