Charming and lyrical,
The Hand Of Love is a Paul Chambers classic. It's related melodically and harmonically to
Beauteous, Paul's other composition from this album; the changes of feel are the opposite, with Latin on the A sections and swing on the bridge. The solos swing throughout.
This song is available as a bass line transcription, and we also have a transcription of Paul Chambers' solo; click on Solos and Bass Corner for more details.
The complete combo arrangement for quintet is also available as a Second Floor Music publication from various online music dealers, including
Hal Leonard. It features a Full Score; 1st parts Trumpet, Alto Sax, C treble clef; 2nd parts Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, Trombone; rhythm section Piano, Bass, Drums.
Paul Chambers' third album as the sole leader, "
Paul Chambers Quintet" is also the second recording of
Clifford Jordan, two months after Clifford's debut "Blowing In From Chicago" co-led with John Gilmore.
The rhythm section of Tommy Flanagan, Paul Chambers, and Elvin Jones also recorded together twice in 1959: on
Curtis Fuller's "
Sliding Easy" and Thad Jones' "Motor City Scene." Other recordings with Paul and Elvin together include two large ensemble classics: Miles Davis' "Sketches Of Spain" and John Coltrane's "Africa/Brass."
CLIP A transcription is available for Paul Chambers' one-chorus solo. He begins his solo based on the melody, and continues his signature melodic style throughout. Every idea is just as clear as any horn soloist.
For the bass line transcription click on Bass Corner.
CLIP As with
Beauteous, from the same album, we have a transcription showing all of Paul Chambers' bass lines on this recording. It includes the vamp intro, in and out heads and his walking for solos by Tommy Flanagan,
Clifford Jordan and Donald Byrd. The in melody is cued on a smaller staff above the bass staff. Notable fingerings are included. These transcriptions are a great resource to study bass lines.
