This fun chart has a 32-measure AABA form, except, after the bridge on the out melody, Hank wrote a new ending section featuring the soloist and the drummer. Makes an exciting ending.
"Peckin' TIme" was recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's legendary Hackensack Studio.
This is the first song on the "Peckin' Time" album. One of Hank's absolute favorite piano and bass combinations was Wynton Kelly and Paul Chambers. You find the two combined with several different drummers on Hank's sessions. The three musicians, Wynton, Paul and Hank, first recorded together on Johnny Griffin's "A Blowing Session" date for Blue Note on April 6, 1957. The "Peckin' Time" session is the first time Wynton Kelly and Paul Chambers both appear together on one of Hank's own recording dates. The drummer on "Peckin' Time" is Hank's friend since their teenage days, Charli Persip. Some of both Hank's and Charli's first recording sessions were when they played together with Dizzy Gillespie in 1954: two Dizzy big band sessions, and also a sextet and a quintet date with Diz.
