Description

A romantic bossa, with a lyrical melody, wide open for expressive interpretation. This melody often winds around stepwise for a particularly plaintive and passionate sound. The form is a bit more straightforward than in some other Bertha Hope songs: ABCD, with C the same as A, and D starting similar to B but with a different end. There is a four-measure tag on the D section, extending the form to 36 measures.

Our lead sheet is based on this original quartet recording. Bertha Hope plays an eight-measure solo piano intro, the melody line of which is shown in the C lead sheet. Click on the second album cover for Bertha’s solo piano arrangement, which has a different form.

Piano Corner

An intricate solo piano arrangement of Luna Negra, different from the original version in its form. The melody chorus is an even 32 measures with no tag; in this arrangement it’s repeated twice, between an eight-measure intro and 14-measure coda. Both the intro and coda feature striking rhythmic themes that really frame the arrangement. Left-hand bass lines at A and C fill in around the melody notes. The phrasing is very specific throughout, with a lot of rhythmic push and pull on the melody relative to the way it’s written in the lead sheet.

Bertha Hope

A dynamic force in improvised music, pianist Bertha Hope has been making headway in the jazz scene since the early 1960s. Raised in Los Angeles, Bertha attended Manual Arts High School. She began her jazz journey with pianists Elmo Hope and Richie Powell in her youth. Although she studied piano at Los Angeles Community College, she received her B.A. in early childhood education from Antioch College. She married Elmo in 1960; they moved to New York where Bertha worked as a telephone operator by day and performed at night. Read more...
