Description

Night Flight is an apt title for this Harold Vick composition—the melody seems like it's fleeing the very chart itself, skidding through in clipped phrases. The lightning speed and short phrases create an adrenaline rush that comes collapsing down in the final lines with a long descending phrase. It's an enjoyable, evocative chart that will win over combos of any instrumentation. Listening to our audio excerpt, you'll hear it's actually a clever long meter (24-measure) minor blues. Historical Notes

Tenor saxophonist Harold Vick was always a favorite with organ players. His recording career started with organist Brother Jack McDuff in 1961 and Harold continued to record many times with him. Harold's first album with Big John Patton was in April, 1963, a month before Harold recorded his own "Steppin' Out" album for Blue Note (also with Patton). Night Flight comes from Harold's last recording with Patton.

Harold Vick is a quintessential example of a great saxophonist and composer who never gained wide public recognition, but was always highly regarded by his fellow musicians. Even jazz legend Sonny Rollins paid compositional tribute to him in 1998 with Did You See Harold Vick? Harold was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, which is also the birthplace of Thelonious Monk. At 13, Harold received a clarinet and inspiration from his uncle Prince Robinson, a well-respected clarinetist and tenor saxophonist who played with the likes of Duke Ellington, Roy Eldridge and Louis Armstrong from the 1920s-1950s.
