The fanfare-like start, which also sets up drum fills for leader and drummer Art Blakey, develops into a 16-measure ensemble introduction. Our audio excerpt starts with the intro, which is notated in all lead sheets, with both horn parts also indicated. This is great as a set opener.
The melody switches to a 2-feel and moves smoothly and convincingly over the changes. Don Sickler recalls, "I remember the first time I played this arrangement, I didn't realize that Hank had borrowed the chord progression from Confirmation until I got into the solo section. He also changed the key to C concert."

"Meet You At The Jazz Corner Of The World Vol.1" was recorded remotely by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder at Birdland in New York City.
Blue Note Records recorded all the sets by the Jazz Messengers the evening of September 14, 1960, at Birdland in NYC. Two albums of music were released. The third set started with The Opener. It was repeated again in the 4th set (second number), and that is the performance that was used on Volume 1. More information about this session can be found in the notes for High Modes which was released on Volume 2.
